Burgers of Scooby Doo proportions; milkshakes from another era; chips of substance and weight; Gourmet Burger Kitchen is the sort of restaurant chain that makes Londonist happy.

Developed by three New Zealanders craving for a taste of home, “where gourmet burgers are recognised as a favoured way of eating for busy people and families seeking good quality convenient food,” GBK has several locations throughout London. Apparently, busy people and families in London seek the same, as these places always seem to be pumping with happy eaters. Oh yeah, the press loves GBK too.

We recommend GBK’s Kiwiburger (100% Aberdeen-Angus Scotch beef, beetroot, egg, pineapple, cheese, salad and relish) with a side of chips and an order of garlic mayo (if you’re not too self-conscious about bad breath). However, if that’s a bit too extravagant for you, GBK has an extensive list of burgers, including plenty of non-bovine options such as venison, falafel, portabella mushroom, and many more. Portions are big; so, if you're the type to fill up quick, consider sharing a burger or side with a friend.

For the record, we’re not enamoured with GBK’s “fresh sour dough sesame seed buns,” which honestly always seem a bit stale and somewhat cardboard-y in texture. Of course, the good stuff between those buns more than makes up for this flaw. Service is generally okay, but we have noticed a few locations to be less than sparkling clean. Gourmet Burger Kitchen ain’t cheap, but its mega-portions are good-value-for-money.
