After a week off spent organising our copious Laserdisc collection, the Repertory Film Round-up is back to sift through the silver screen classics that London offers the discerning cineaste. Thursday: Hot-foot it to Highgate tonight for the You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat film quiz, which this time is themed around "Blockbusters" - a subject the Rep Film Round-up confesses to being less than au fait with. Entry is two quid, and it begins......

They gave us a chance to win a home cinema system, and now they're showing films for us. You've got to love Film4 and Somerset House. The Film4 Summer Screen starts up on 31st July, and runs until 9th August. As in previous years, it's the perfect opportunity to curl up on a nice blanket, a bottle of wine and watch a film outdoors on a (hopefully) lovely summer evening. You'll want to arrive......

In the UK, Joe Rogan is probably best known for playing Joe Garrelli in the sitcom NewsRadio, as a presenter on the American reality show Fear Factor, and as a commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. What us Londoners may not be aware of is that Joe is also a prolific stand-up comedian, gigging regularly to huge audiences around America for over fifteen years. He mixes traditional stand-up with political satire, a dissection of......

It's the time of year that sends compulsive list makers in to a frenzy, and this girl is no exception. It's the Notes From The City Official 2006 End Of Year Things-That-Laura-Liked Summary - catchy! It's as much a list of things I really think everyone should check out as a list of my favourite things from the year, so follow the links at will... Top 10 Albums 1. The Eraser - Thom Yorke 2.......

Every day this month the Londonist team will be pointing you in the direction of a Christmas present that (with a bit of luck) you won't already have on your list. Climb up onto our collective lap and we'll see what we can move from our sack to your stockings... Londonist: So do you think it's a bad thing to suggest to the readers that they may want to buy our book as a......

Werewolves. It's a simple fact that any film, no matter how great or poor, can easily be improved with a werewolf. Revolver by Guy Ritchie for example would have been worth suffering through if in the final five minutes the entire cast had been ripped apart by a lycanthrope. At the other end of the scale a tremendous movie such as Brokeback Mountain would have been even more memorable if Jack and Ennis were......

Watching Return of the Killer Tomatoes! back in the day it would have taken a brave person to point at the bepermed George Clooney and say "One day he'll be a major Hollywood player... " While we loved him in E.R. doing the buddy buddy thing with Mark, annoying the hell out of everyone else and occasionally punching crappy parents in the chops, he still didn't seem destined for greatness. Then Tarantino arrived, gave......

The London Australian Film Festival kicks off on Thursday 2 March and runs for ten days. The main draw will be outback 'western' written by Nick Cave. The Proposition may be not quite as touchy feely as Brokeback Mountain, but it certainly has more believable facial hair. A Nick Cave/Warren Ellis soundtrack, Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone and John Hurt make this a pretty hot ticket. Also on offer are Jewboy, Look Both Ways, Irresistible......

This week: Proof, Lady Vengeance, and Final Destination 3. Plus all the usual news and rumours. Bloody hell, Jake Gyllenhaal again! We've typed his name so many times in the past few weeks that we can actually spell it correctly without having to check Google. What's weird though is that with every J.G. 2006 release the reviews get steadily worse. Brokeback Mountain is an 'instant classic'. Jarhead was 'stylish but boring' and now we......

Back in December of last year we reported on the nominations for the London Film Critic Awards and even went as far as to provide a few predictions as to who might win some of the gongs. Well last night the awards were handed out, so it's time to see just how we did (and gauge whether it's worth having a punt on Oscar night or just saving our money for an extra large......

The Londonist Literary List appears every Tuesday. If you’d like to bring an event to our attention, please email londonistlit@gmail.com. Once again and at this point to no one's great surprise, there's hardly a damn thing occuring on the London literary circuit this week. In December, we chalked it up to the holidays, but it's mid-January now and the holidays are long gone. Yes, we are leading up to the most depressing time of......

This week: Jarhead, Breakfast on Pluto, and Cry Wolf. So last week we had Brokeback Mountain, a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal that everyone loved. And this week we have Jarhead a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal that...most people quite like. The film gets its best rating from Pete 'Bad Tempered' Bradshaw in the Guardian who gave Brokeback five stars last week. Jarhead doesn't quite manage that but four stars is still pretty good, especially where......

This week: Brokeback Mountain, Match Point and Just Friends. Plus film news and gossip. Well after the festive break and a whole host of pre-Christmas cinematic dirge isn't it nice to start the new year off with a release that everyone just loves? That film is of course Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's tale of cowboy love based on a 1997 New Yorker story by Annie Proulx and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. It......

Just a quick, special edition of the FFN this week as there's no real cinema releases, so Instead we're going to take a look at the films we're really looking forward to in 2006. These aren't necessarily the ones that we 'guarantee' will be great, they're just the ones we're pinning our hopes on and will be quite annoyed about if they don't live up to expectations. We've split them up into three sections......

The nominations for the London Film Critic Awards (as voted for by the Critics Circle, who else?) were announced today. So here's a quick rundown of who's up for what. Pride and Prejudice (which we have to admit, we didn't go and see) has got the most nominations with eight, including best actor for Matthew MacFadyen, best director for Joe Wright, best actress for Keira Knightley, and best supporting actress for both Brenda Blethyn......
