While reviews for Canteen are mixed, Londonist has had nothing but good meals at both their branches (service can be surly though). A whole day's worth of meals have been put away there, from the eggs benedict above for breakfast through to the veal and chicken pie below for dinner. Portion sizes are generous, making for some extravagant photos. A recent roast duck meal came to the table with two whole duck legs, generosity......

While the turkeys are getting nervous and the butchers are doing a roaring trade in this crucial last week before Christmas, a very unwelcome slaughter has taken place in Letchmore Heath, Herts. Gangotri was a sacred cow at the Bhaktivedanta Manor Hindu temple; she had been injured in what the report calls 'a mating injury' last September and had been unable to stand since then. She was given a fatal dose of barbiturate by......

It’s cold outside this week, so it seems like the best plan is to cozy up on the couch and watch some telly. Why would you want to risk frostbite? On TV, Londonist likes: Monday, 12 November I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here (ITV1, 21:00-22:30) It’s off to the jungle yet again with Ant & Dec as they guide a new group of “celebs” through as many disgusting tasks as you’d......

Had TfL existed in his time, the great Samuel Johnson may well have amended his famous aphorism to read "a man who is bored of London needs to hop on the number 19 bus". In its perambulation from Battersea to Finsbury Park, the 19 cuts a swath across the capital's economic and cultural barriers, revealing the world within one city that modern London manifests. Vogue has certainly been impressed by the number 19. The......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 19. Spinning Argh! No wonder there is apathy. At the time of writing this, a general election is still undecided, although if Gordon Brown goes ahead with it, it could lead to a really exciting time. They are going to really be schmoozing us lot, as our demographic are least likely to vote. In preparation......

Brits love curry. London loves curry. We love curry. FACT. But the quality of curry available to you in your local restaurant or supermarket can vary wildly. Vineet Bhatia, a Michelin starred pioneer of Indian fine dining in the capital, has put himself to considerable distress to help educate us about what proper Indian food is all about. He's been tasting supermarket ready meal versions of his beloved cuisine. Bhatia opens his latest restaurant......

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and......

Sometimes a burger and fries is the only thing that will satisfy your hunger. Something simple and straighforward that you can hold in one hand, neatly packaged in two pieces of tasty bread that have soaked up the juices and sauces that ooze so delectably out of the multitudinous burger fillings piled up in between. But at other times... at other times, a person needs to pick delicately and carefully through the cracked shells......

The London Review of Breakfasts checks out the Breakfast Club in Islington, and they are impressed with the Full English (plus some) that they get for 7 quid, even though it's the tiniest bit burnt. 6. Animal Apparitions: Chickens Yes, chickens. Prepare yourself for a fowl tale. The strangest of all London’s animal spirits has to be the spectral chicken of Highgate’s Pond Square. This quirky enigma originates from 1626 when philosopher Sir Francis Bacon was travelling with Dr Witherborne, friend and physician to James I. During their journey the gents discussed Bacon’s idea of preserving food by freezing, at which Witherborne scoffed. So, to prove a point Bacon......

It all began with the London Burlesque Festival. Then there was a naked bike ride of all things (we don't even want to think about 'saddle rash'). There are many very awful comedy clubs in London (see: Jongleurs Battersea, Jongleurs Camden, Jongleurs Bow) We begrudgingly admit that there is probably some sort of need for these banal stag-night magnet, "2-4-1 on bottles of carlsberg? Let's get a bucket of spicy chicken wings and soak up the casual misogyny" temples of humour-barren shite, but don't dare invite us to come when there are a good deal of small clubs run by......

We've been invaded, albeit willingly, by Vikings recently. Ah, that sounds a bit filthy. What we're trying to say is that London-based fans of Viking metal have been particularly well catered for recently, what with Ensiferum the other week and with Amon Amarth last Wednesday at the Islington Academy. Actually, the AA gig was more of a double bill as far as this Londonista was concerned; with Finntroll providing support, for once the non-headline......

We’re always on the lookout for a good Indian restaurant for pesky out-of-town visitors who seem to think curry’s all that’s worth exploring in the foodie fleshpots of London. So we were cooking with gas when we scored an interview with the Bombay Bicycle Club — their motto: “a stop for “a curry a cut above the rest and ‘adventurous’ alternatives”. As you may know, being open-minded is a pre-requisite for those interested in......

Papa Mouse: [To his 9 starving children] My little mouslings, the snow of a few weeks ago has been particularly cruel to us and our humble home, here in the space between the bins behind Yummy Fried Chicken Shack in Newham.
