All this to-ing and fro-ing is making us dizzy! 'WeirGate' took an unexpected twist today when Team Australia withdrew their successful appeal for a re-run of the men's 800m whelchair final. In a letter signed by the head coach and silver medallist Kurt Fearnley they called for the medals to be awarded as per the race yesterday. So Londoner Dave Weir keeps his gold afterall. Just as soon as we talk about the success of one of our city's Paralympians in Beijing, it all gets a bit more complicated. Londoner Dave Weir, in his third of five different events he's competing in, managed to win the 800m wheelchair final today to take his first gold medal (to sit alongside his silver and bronze from two earlier distances). Australia's Kurt Fearnley came second, 0.15 seconds behind. Australia appealed the result......

Working at my first ever Paralympic Games in Beijing, this Londonista heard and understood the maxim: 'Heroes are born at the Olympics; Heroes come to the Paralympics.' The Paralympics are the equivalent of the Olympics for athletes with physical, mental, and sensorial disabilities (so you'll see athletes with all sorts of disabilities, amputations, blindness, cerebral palsy etc). Each sport's heats and finals are now well under way, building up to a finale this Wednesday......
