We've already told you about Oxjam. You know the deal. Listen to great music, dance around like a loon, support Oxfam. It makes perfect sense. And that £1 million target won't raise itself, you know... Grumpy Old Drunks - The Drunks are in charge at Nambucca and ULU this weekend. Live performances from the Piney Gir Country Roadshow and ace gypsy punk outfit (and stars of Stokefest 2007) The Destroyers, while The Maccabees and......

Well, the elements gave us a bit of a battering last week, with plenty of damage and several people killed. But lest we get all worked up about global warming and freaky weather, it's worth remembering that the capital is no stranger to the Force 10 fart of Mother Nature. Here's a roundup of, erm, past wind. 1091: Strong winds make their debut on the recorded history of London. On October 23rd that year,......

We're back in Holborn again this week, with a view looking East down High Holborn itself, towards the City. The earlier image was taken in 1904, when horse-drawn wagons were still a common sight on the streets of London. Most of the buildings have been replaced - partly because of the heavy bombing sustained by this part of town during WWII. One noticeable exception is the single-storey building to the left of shot. This......

A tribute to the capital’s alleys, ginnels and snickleways. 12. St Chad's Place Where? Dingy little dogleg behind King's Cross Thameslink. What? Ah, St Chad. You know, the brother of St Cedd and St Cynibild? Founder of the moanstery at Barrow-upon-Humber? Patron saint of rigged elections? No? Since ancient times, this spot contained a small, health-giving spring dedicated to the saint. St Chad's Well, was one of several ancient and important water supplies associated......

Well, we don’t have any photos of the striking cab drivers, but we found someone who would no doubt sympathise. This photo, of RE Harris Motor Engineers, was taken down John’s Mews, near Gray’s Inn Road. The sign’s been around for a while (check out that phone number), but the message seems particularly appropriate given the attention Camden’s traffic policies have received this week.......

The mystery red line is back. And this time it's tricksier than ever. The new piece of minimalist pavement art picks up where it left off, opposite the Novotel on Euston Road. (Camden Council must be apoplectic, after doing their best to erase the earlier marking.) We followed it along Pentonville Road for quite some way until it took a sharp right down Amwell Street into Finsbury. From there, it runs into Roseberry Avenue......

Remember when buses used to catch fire and we wouldn't immediately assume it was terrorists? Ah, they were the good days weren't they? The days when everything was Transport for London's fault and spontaneous combustion had nothing to do with world politics and everything to do with bad engineering. Anyway, suffice to say, the small fire on a London bus on Gray's Inn Road has caused the closure of several roads "but is not......

A break from the norm in this week's Monday Music Review as we lead with a single review and eschew the normal full album reviews (mainly because we couldn't bear to listen to the albums more than once and we have yet to reach a level of cynicism that makes us write reviews based on solely one listen). The Eighteenth Day of May - The Highest Tree / Sir Casey Jones (single) The Eighteenth Day......

A Midweek Music News already? It seems like only yesterday we posted the albums round-up. That's the trouble with these Bank Holidays; nice as they are, they do screw up the body clock somewhat. It doesn't help when you're writing about bands called The Eighteenth Day of May on the fourth day of May (on the second working day of May) who have a gig on the sixth day of May but told you......
