Just a heads up that National Express East Anglia services are still disrupted and running a reduced service into Liverpool Street station due to overhead power cables which collapsed onto the line on Monday evening. Ironically, £150m worth of work on renewing overhead power cables between London and Chelmsford was begun by Network Rail earlier this year with a finish date projected for 2012 (like everything else). The line is expected to be back to......

Carving your beloved's name on the trunk of a tree, or doodling it on the school desk, is so 20th century. For the modern urban dweller, the only way to really impress your betrothed is to spread your love in three-foot high letters on the side of a train. That was Raymond Agbegahs's plan. The graffiti vandal has spent the past decade spraying messages for his girlfriend on train carriages and railway stations in......

TfL have been in touch to clarify things, saying: The work planned by Transport for London at Liverpool Street Station, to demolish a bridge, was completed ahead of schedule last Saturday (29 December). Unfortunately, Liverpool Street Station remains closed because Network Rail, which is outside Transport for London's control, has not finished their engineering work on time. We advise passengers to check with National Rail enquiries for the latest information. So now you know who......

Modernisation of the Thameslink railway route that runs North-South through central London has finally begun; this news today must come as a relief to anyone who has the displeasure to share packed morning trains with this Londonista. Supposedly, the £5.5 billion project will bring "more seats, less crowding, more direct services and better connections in London," according to Andrew Mitchell of Network Rail. Longer station platforms, more peak-time trains and new rolling stock are......

Londonist arrived at work a few days ago to hear some distressing news: AMT, which only serves 100% Fairtrade coffee to its punters, appears to have lost the contract from Network Rail for their outlets at ten of London’s major railway stations. The company that has won the franchise in AMT’s place does not, we are told, offer any Fairtrade products. Our distress stems from the fact that not only will we be losing......

As expected it turns out that faulty points were responsible for the train crash on Friday night: Investigators have found one of three stretcher bars was not in position, one had nuts and bolts missing and two were fractured. The bars join the moving rails, keeping them a set distance apart. Network Rail chief executive John Armitt said his organisation was "devastated" by the report and he offered an "unreserved apology". The London to......

The trial of the City lawyer who was stabbed outside Kensal Green underground starts today and already we've learned his attackers used his phone to call their girlfriends. Also on trial today: Three 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old, accused of murdering Zainab Kalokoh during a christening in Peckham. The 33-year-old was shot dead while cradling a baby. Network Rail have pleaded guilty to charges related to the 1999 Ladbroke Grove crash. They now face an......

The Met have announced that they have foiled (wow, the Met love the word foiled) three terrorist plots since the suicide attacks on July 7. While a new survey has found that sixteen per cent of British Muslims believe that while the 7 July attacks were wrong, the cause was right. Yesterday afternoon two adults and a child died in a fire above a newsagent's shop near the All England Club in Wimbledon. Network......

A manhunt is underway for the guman who opened fire on two men outside Finsbury Park station last night, wounding a female bystander in the process. Its thought the same person is responsible for an earlier shooting on Upper Street. Network Rail wants to distribute its own free afternoon newspaper across 10 of its London stations. The 'sex theme park' for the West End is official. Amora - The Academy of Sex and Relationships......

Sorry we're late. We got held up on the Tube (one of our servers went down). 41% of all children in London are living in poverty. To try and combat this Ken Livingstone and the Association of London Government have today launched The London Child Poverty Commission. American officials at Guantanamo Bay claim that 'dozens' of the detainees there had contact with the terrorist cells responsible for the July 7 bombings. The Tower of London's......

Hey, hey, hey; more positive (sounding) transport news, hot on the wheels of the Victoria Tube revamp we recently highlighted. According to the Beeb, Network Rail are to invest ‘£4bn into improving the UK's stations over the next 10 years’, including several London termini. As well as much needed refurbs, Euston, Waterloo and Victoria would also see associated commercial and residential developments. Euston Station already has a very large residential population, most of whom......

Another bit of London lore has become a thing of the past. Staff at Clapham Junction station, the BBC reports, are to stop honouring the secret shortcut password. The password has long been a piece of useful local knowledge for Claphamites heading home after dark. The junction sprawls over a huge area, and navigating around it requires the use of a road tunnel that is dark and distinctly threatening at night. In order to......
