Let's be honest: You've been hearing for ages about how New Cross is the super hip new neighbourhood, that's all sorts of amazing arts related activities are going on down there, and you're absolutely going to chceck it out. But you haven't. If ever there was an excuse to go exloring, than Saturday's Nail the Cross is it. Stretching across six venues and many many hours, Nail The Cross is featuring dozens of bands......

Sickening details of the so far motiveless murder of 2 French Imperial College research students have emerged over lunchtime. The stab wounds inflicted on the two men were so extensive that the attack has been described as "frenzied" and the DCI in charge of the case spoke of how everyone involved in the investigation has been "deeply shocked" by the extent of the attack. No murder weapon has yet been found. The attacker set fire......

It's not often Londonist highlights a Lewisham Council plaque unveiling, but when it's of one commemorating such a great Londoner, we're glad to make an exception. The plaque in question was unveiled early this month on Camplin Street, New Cross, and marks the site where the historian Roy Porter (1954–2002) spent his childhood. Porter combined astonishing erudition with an all-encompassing approachability. His plaque is a fitting reminder of the normal and everyday background of......

Our environmentally sustainable Mayor is taking on the IOC bigwigs who are demanding VIP fast lanes for a fleet of up to 3000 cars "to take officials, politicians and corporate sponsors to venues" at the 2012 Games. No fool he, cunningly waiting until they'd finished their progress inspection and given a favourable verdict earlier this week. He's not diving headlong into a fight though, preferring to wait until the Beijing Olympics are over this......

Heads up people: the East London Line closes this Saturday. It will undergo a magical transformation that will take rather a long time but the line will reemerge from a 3 year chrysalis as a beautiful section of the newly tangerine London Overground network, linking the North and East London railways. You'll eventually be able to travel from Richmond in the West all the way round in a massive arterial horseshoe via the existing......

After following up a superb night with The Field by bringing Gui Boratto a few months later, Allez-Allez have fastly become one of our favourite club promoters. If we're not dancing to the best in minimal techno at one of their Plastic People events, then we're likely downloading one of the many installments in their excellent podcast mix series. This Wednesday, Sam and Steve return to Plastic People with techno superduo Supermayer (Superpitcher + Michael......

Following it's postponement earlier in the year, a rescheduled date has just been announced for the annual Insomniacs Ball. Now held on September 29th at regular venue SE1, this year's ball has a distinctly Ed Banger whiff to it. This is by no means a bad thing, in fact if you're into your sleazy electro it's a run round the house hi-fiving people thing. First up from the Ed Banger camp, snarky American pop......

Peckham Academy school and nearby Harris Girls' Academy in East Dulwich are to reopen this morning after threats of 'gang violence' last Friday meant they had to be evacuated. Escalating trouble between rival gangs in the area (the Ghetto Boys from Lewisham and the Peckham Boys) resulted in the stabbing of 29-year-old Jason Gayle-Bent in New Cross last Sunday. On Friday afternoon police were told that "one group would be lying in wait to......

This week I've been getting really excited about all the new bands I keep seeing and hearing. Since starting to play gigs in Lewisham and meeting a lot of the Lewisham/New Cross bands I've been impressed not only by the music but by the sense of community they're building up and the DIY attitude they display in every aspect of their work. They're just doing their thing, releasing independent EPs and split singles, gigging all......

Now, time to clear one thing up once and for all. The image above is not a Banksy. Everyone, from this week’s TimeOut to whoever scrawled that speech bubble is making the same mistake. Just because it’s a black stencil, it must be Banksy. In fact, this South Bank graf is by Arofish. We know this because (a) his tag’s written at the bottom, (b) he’s used this stencil before and (c) it’s on......

We know that some of you were lucky enough to play small roles in last year's sleeper hit comedy Shaun of the Dead, and we know that like us you've watched its various successes with barely restrained glee. Some of the Londonist folks were involved too, and got treated to some very fine entertainment in the bowels of Crouch End and New Cross. We were thusly thrilled to see the cheeky chappies Simon Pegg......
