Back before there was Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, or Meg Ryan and virtually any other male lead, there was Kate Hepburn and Cary Grant, Kate Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, Kate Hepburn and – well, you get the idea. Never seen the inimitable Ms Hepburn on the silver screen before? Now’s your chance: she and a host of other sharp, witty, irrepressible, and, of course, gorgeous comedic heroines will......

Philadelphia experimental indie stars Enon play the Luminaire on Monday night, with around 17 tickets left (at time of writing) on We Got Tickets. Support comes in the shape of Ill Ease, which features "Elizabeth Sharp playing guitar, bass, drums, tambourine, shaker, car horn and anything else that rattles, buzzes, shakes or hums in a riff-o-matic racket" apparently. Should be good. Meanwhile over at 93 Feet East, Seattle singer-songwriter David Bazan plays his folk-rock. Tickets......

You could be forgiven for thinking that to watch any sporting competition with the designation "All Ireland" you'd have to take a trip to Dublin and beyond, but Gaelic Football was actually one of the leaders of the current trend to play matches in your national championship overseas. Indeed, they've gone further and established clubs outside the Emerald Isle itself, several of which are based in and around London. Of those, the one that......

SFist saw Christmas Day turn tragic after a Siberian tiger escaped from her pen at the San Francisco Zoo, killing a visitor and mauling two others. Phillyist counted down the top ten items on Philadelphia's New Year's wish list. Gothamist looked at the wooden bikes being offered for NYC's first bike share program on Governors Island. LAist received a Christmas present in the form of a drunk Santa Claus in a g-string. Bostonist launched......

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and......

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom......

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take......

This Week In London’s History Monday – 9th July 1968: The Hayward art gallery on the South Bank is opened by the Queen. Tuesday – 10th July 1958: Britain’s first parking meters are installed in Mayfair. Soon there would be 625 of them in the district, charging 6 pence per hour. Wednesday – 11th July 1848: Waterloo Station is opened. The original station would survive just 52 years until 1900, when it would be......

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week. Being the nation's capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they......

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version......

It seems like, all across the network, folks were up to no good. Maybe it was all the green beer from last weekend... Gothamist spent the week writing about New Yorkers behaving badly: at the post office, at the Garden, and at the fertility clinic. Calvin Klein may not be misbehaving, but he's just a little dirty, and in a completely different way than some NYC kitchens. SFist had its share of misbehave-rs, too, like......

This week - Rocky has another bite at the boxing apple (Rocky Balboa) and Cate Blanchet gets shot in the neck and all manner of problems arise (Babel). The general feeling in the press about Rocky Balboa, the sixth Rocky film, has been one of mild embarrassment. What is Sly doing? He's 60 for God's sake! Wasn't Rocky rubbish the first time? However, we here at Londonist do not follow the journalistic tides of......

It’s disheartening to arrive at a gig and find one of your favourite bands selling their own merchandise from the top of a beer-soaked table, chain-smoking to help them endure the electro-schlock being peddled by the support band. Recent warm-up slots with the Raconteurs and The Magic Numbers couldn’t help the Philadelphia 5 piece sell out the relatively tiny Metro club, confirming your worst fears about the music industry’s inability to work out what......

Jagshemash! Borat is a hit. It's getting rave reviews, grossing millions, and definitely the most quotable thing we've seen in ages. But Borat seems to have missed most of the -ist cities, and we were all wondering how the film would have been different if he'd made his way around the world on the -ist tour. In Shanghai, Borat would be observing Inane Learnings of Penis Photos for Make Benefit Glorious Flat World of......

A BBC Proms concert due to take place yesterday evening had to be cancelled after a small fire at the Royal Albert Hall. According to the Beeb part of the building was 'filled with smoke' after a fire broke out in the artists' bar but "no-one was injured or trapped". The concert, by the Philadelphia Orchestra was due to feature works by Beethoven and Matthias Pintscher and was to be broadcast on Radio Three......

All the weeks highlights from our international sister sites. Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They're also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues......

Last week, as The Sultan's Elephant brought theatre and spectacle onto the streets and straight to the people, an apt debate titled West End Theatre Should Be Sunk In The Atlantic. took place at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark. Time Out’s Deputy Theatre Editor, Rachel Halliburton. David Rosenberg, Director of the Shunt Collective and Phil Willmott, Artistic Director of The Steam Industry represented the non-West End theatre side and argued for the swift......

Last week, Fraser James used the power of Lawro to good effect, scoring a highly respectable 3 out of 5. After Sarah Johnson had hit the same score the previous week, we felt that the 'FPP' (as it's known in the corridors of power) was beginning to reach new heights of prediction excellence and consistency. Sadly, our balloon of complacency was soon pricked by the following missive... "You recent guest predictions have been disappointing,......

Where would we be without Google? Still using Altavista, probably. Anyway, the Little Search Engine That Could has thrown up a fascinating, but utterly pointless, exercise in urbanism. Some places become so associated with a certain class of person or lifestyle that they become intrinsically associated. Thanks to Mr Tony Blair and his cohorts, the word Islington now conjures a whole range of desirable and undesirable overtones - polenta, The Guardian, metropolitan middle class......

If you're a fan of Eastern cinema then try and read this post with a defibrillator handy because the Firecracker film festival lineup is one of artery exploding brilliance. We'll try and ease you into it gently by simply stating that it runs from the 8th to the 18th of September and makes its home at the Curzon Soho, Curzon Mayfair, Genesis Whitechapel and Gate Notting Hill. The festival will also... oh fuck it.......

Londonist would just like to take this opportunity to say a big 'hello' to the new newest members of the -ist family: Shanghaiist and Phillyist. Shanghaiist (bit greedy with the vowels there fellas) are already answering some of the big questions of the day, such as 'could Cliff Clavin from Cheers have been Chinese?' and 'why the hell would anyone want to jump over the Great Wall of China on a skateboard?'. Philadelphia meanwhile......
