When Boris scrapped The Londoner he was fulfilling a pledge to divert the money to tree planting and 'protect and preserve' our open spaces. Today it was announced that we'll be able to vote for our local park to get a slice of the £6m pie set aside for the Priority Parks project. Taking a leaf out of reality TV's preferred way of doing things, he told the BBC: Londoners know best which areas......

Well, OK, maybe we’re getting a little medieval and melodramatic here (although we could have said "Off with his head!"). But Londonist’s blood is boiling today, and a Londonist with boiled blood is not a pretty sight. We are most certainly not alone. The story of a mindless thug who mindlessly punched a 96 year old man in the face because he couldn’t get past him to exit a tram is appalling. And today we......

Every now and then, a bit of London-centric news drifts around the Londonist newsroom (which doesn't exist but imagine a bunch of emails flying around in lieu of an actual office) and is not paid that much attention. However, there comes a time when something requires a closer look for what it is really saying, such as this report on a poll for the top ten London film locations. Commissioned by cinema advertising company......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 19. Spinning Argh! No wonder there is apathy. At the time of writing this, a general election is still undecided, although if Gordon Brown goes ahead with it, it could lead to a really exciting time. They are going to really be schmoozing us lot, as our demographic are least likely to vote. In preparation......

Boris Johnson today won the Conservative Party open primary to determine who will be the Conservative Candidate for London Mayor. Quelle surprise! The poll was open to Londoners of all political colours, sadly the poll wasn't highjacked by thousands of Warwick Lightfoot's magical woodland friends from the Shire. In fact, only 0.37% of eligible voters took part. Hooray for democracy. The results were as follows - Boris Johnson 15,661 Victoria Borwick 1,869 Andrew Boff......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 17. Yeah whatever I did a little poll about why so many of us are apathetic towards politics. The subject of politics is so huge and disparate that it’s overwhelming, so for this I focused on the issue of tax. Now, once again the numbers were incredibly small (24) but have a read, as the......

Fake holy water seized! By God! Fake fags seized! By dog! Calls for Edgware Road station to change its name to Chapel Street Market. Which has the surreal advantage of being an anagram of The Spectral Meerkat. UPDATE: Seems it's actually Church Street Market. Whoever can come up with the best anagram for that wins a goat. Do you really, really enjoy plastic carrier bags? Is their acquisition at the expense of the environment......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 15. Poll-itics II Last week we did a little poll about what people thought was important to some of the topical political parties. What is the most important thing to our political parties then? There is so much information on these parties that it is tricky to tell. But from a quick look at their......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 14. Poll-itics Well, I did a quick little poll this week amongst group of 26 professional people aged 20 – 35. Just to ask them what they thought were the most and least important issues to the following parties: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green, Socialist, BNP and UKIP. The results produced from this (admittedly tiny)......

Over 270,000 people have signed a Christian petition to oppose the proposed building of a supposedly enormous mosque in Newham. The petition, which closed this week, stated: We the Christian population of this great country England would like the proposed plan to build a Mega Mosque in East London Scrapped. This will only cause terrible violence and suffering and more money should go into the NHS. Human rights organisation Blink lobbied the No. 10......

Rarely has our flabber been so gasted as when we heard Charlton Athletic manager Alan Pardew on the radio last week recounting his half-time words to Graham Poll, the referee of his side's Premiership match against Reading, regarding Charlton's influential midfielder Alexandre Song who had been booked in the first half: I said, 'If he makes another challenge which you are unhappy about I cannot do anything if it is a silly one, I......

It's Eurovision down-time, and we've been a bit quiet. All the songs have been selected (they're selected early so the CD can be made). Now we're just waiting for Helsinki 2007 to kick off. So what to do during down-time? You could work out how much it would cost to go from London to Berlin, onto Paris to Tallinn, Helsinki, Prague and Amsterdam as Scooch sing. Fun! You could try to predict the winner!......

Londonist aged 8: What place has the most dogs? Exasperated parent: I don't know, what place has the most dogs? Londonist aged 8: Barking! Hilarious. And, strangely, true. Barking and Dagenham Council had 8,579 dog owners for 75,108 households, giving it an average of 11.42% ownership. The highest in the land, apparently. Is it a case of nominative determinism or pure coincidence? Dunno, but surveys now need to be done in other parts of......

So if you had to choose between licking the backside of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley or Hermione Granger which would it be? Let's have a poll: We've been looking for an excuse to try that out. This is all about your favourite French stamp of course: From 17 March, Harry - decked out in Hogwarts uniform - will be on stamps for domestic priority mail. Did you notice that the chimney stack atop the Tate Modern looked a little bigger today? A little more erect? Swelled with pride perhaps? Well, no wonder: Tate Modern is the second most visited venue in the country with 4.9m visitors, according to new research. The site, in London's South Bank, saw an increase of 21% in the number of its visitors compared to 2005. If London was on fire and we had time......

If anything calls for a hasty repeat viewing of Carry on at Your Convenience then it's the news that doctors and members of the public have voted public sanitation as the greatest medical breakthrough since 1840. Sewage disposal and clean water supplies, among other aspects of sanitation, were chosen over 15 key medical advances named in an international poll by the British Medical Journal (BMJ). This was not a very happy week for the -ist network as one of our own, Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster, passed away early in the week. Her wit, intelligence, and good nature shone through the site, making Phillyist an immensely fun read. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. You know what really bugs us? It's the dilemma of when you're at a train station and need the toilet - do you pay 20p (which yes, isn't a lot, but feels it when all you want to do is pee) and go in the station or do you go on the train in what, depending on the train company, might be a really tiny box with a bit of a damp floor? Now,......

Turns out London is overcrowded and more houses need to be built. You don't say... Tessa Jowell has told MPs that the cost of the Olympics has gone 'up 900m'. The BBC poll shows 50% of readers currently think it's not worth it. A whopping £200,000 has gone missing from parking meters over the last ten weeks after thieves sawed the meters open. Meanwhile in North London, protesters will gather tonight for a last......

We love Bloc Party. Like properly love them. Every year there's some indie bands that make it and some that don't. 2005 was the year of Kaiser chiefs, Bloc Party and Maximo Park while 2006 has been The Automatic, The Fratellis and Boy Kill Boy. When they first arrived on the scene, they were lauded by all and sundry including the BBC who declared them second in the sound of 2005 poll (behind The......

Scotland Yard is hunting a knife-attack suspect after a mother was brutally stabbed to death on Wickham Street in Vauxhall while on her way to work this morning. Last year this highly un-prestigious honour went to Henley-on-Thames, but in 2006, Barnes has officially bumped Boris's bunch into a shameful second place. Each individual resident in this leafy 'burb spends a not-so-whopping-when-you-think-about-it £149.81 A YEAR on items delivered by mail, according to an annual poll conducted by Experian (a financial services company which keeps tabs on your credit rating. We were upset to learn that the tobacconists Bonds of Oxford Street are no longer Of Oxford Street. The premises that they occupied for the entire childhood of one Londonista has been invaded by a shop that sells handbags. Bonds have been relegated to some backwater trading estate in SW16. Sentimental adolescent memories are attached to that purveyor of fine tobaccos, cigars, and pipes of all distinctions, shapes and sizes; we bought our first......

David Cameron's quest to become carbon neutral got a helpful push yesterday when plans to build solar panels and a roof turbine on the Tory leader's house received the go-ahead from Tory-run Kensington and Chelsea Council. Wind turbines can save you approximately a third off your electricity bill but with a price tag of......

Another first-person article. I promise it's not the start of a trend! Normal service resumes after this post. I wrote an angry, personal opinion post on Monday all about how my friend Phil the physicist goth (part-time goth, anyway) was fined £80 by police for saying their metal detector was "a piece of shit that wouldn't stop anyone". I realise that some people find four-letter words offensive, and I moderate my language in public......

It's probably the 'architecture week effect' but we seem to be drowning in a storm of best/worst building polls at the moment. Only last week we were having a good old moan about the BBC's Worst London Building poll, specifically the fact that the Gherkin has been included in their shortlist. So we were quite pleased to discover today that 30 St Mary Axe has been named London's best new building as part of......

The Readers Digest Global Courtesy Test has put London at a rather disappointing number 15, but maybe the biggest surprise is that the city topping the list (and therefore trouncing us) is...New York.
