The Valley of Fear, out on 20th March, compiles illustrations by a forgotten ‘great Londoner’: Austin Osman Spare. If you’ve never heard of him, don’t worry—most people haven’t. And yet, to a small band of collectors he’s one of the jewels in the capital’s treasure house. This little-known hero, who in his early life was fêted by the critics and gallery owners of the West End, used the method of automatic drawing 20 years......

Our weekly roundup of film reviews returns, courtesy of James Bryan… As we wallow in the truly miserable news that Aliens Vs Predator made more money at the box office last week than No Country for Old Men, we sigh and turn our attentions to this week’s offerings. The three biggest releases this week are all stamped with Oscar. We’ve got Johnny Depp singing in Cockney and slicing throats in Sweeney Todd, Tommy Lee......

From the tallest skyscraper in the City of Brotherly Love to Canadian tourism copywriting brilliance, here's what you should know from our -ist cities: This week, Phillyist took a gleeful listen to the White Stripes' exciting new release, watched in awe as their new tallest skyscraper was finally completed, found a cheaper way to get to Gothamist, invented a tasty new dessert, and brought back their Craigslist Round-Up feature with a bang. Bostonist watches......

Londonist has to say that, despite Charlton's poor start to the season, we were still pretty gobsmacked when we learned on Monday night that a club who had employed its previous manager for almost 15 years had just shown the door to his successor after only 167 days. Apparently, we weren't the only ones: Iain Dowie going has to rank as one of the biggest shocks I have ever witnessed following Charlton. So says......

Hang on a minute. Wasn’t Gary Waddock unveiled as Queens Park Rangers permanent manager a mere three months ago? After a four month trial period? So is it some kind of record that he’s already making way for former team-mate John Gregory? More chillingly, is Londonist starting a trend? Forty-five days back we were sat in an optimistic press conference where Waddock was looking forward to the season ahead. On Wednesday his opposite number......

Named only at the weekend as an official ambassador for London by mayor Ken Livingstone, Chelsea football club have wasted no time in offering assistance to China’s Olympic football team in the run up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In last week's Preview, we acknowledged the fact that our prediction skills were lacking somewhat, so we thought that we'd give Paresh, the newsagent at Wanstead tube station, a chance to have a go instead. Paresh let us down. He got two right, which is no better than our recent efforts. Paresh has expressed his remorse over this sorry performance, but we are afraid that now we have no option but to go and......

Just like Arsene, we believe in bringing through fresh young talent. So whereas the Gooners might have Fabregas, Van Persie, Clichy and Flamini, we've got....Dave. Dave come to us through our recruitment drive , and we'd be happy to hear from any other budding sport writers out there. But for now, over to Dave.... Rest easy Chelsea pensioners, unlike a Labour party conference you will not be forcibly ejected from the ground if you......

We like modern Italians so very much, what with their rich foods and fine wines, innate sense of style, glamorous crime syndicates and all that dolce vita stuff. But we love their Roman forbears, who came, saw, conquered and, most importantly for us, founded this great city we live in. So, with the BBC about to screen its raunchy new blockbuster series ‘Rome’, we went in search of Londinium, which Caesar’s geezers laid down......

Ok, so 'Superbridge' is not the official name for the planned £455 million toll bridge that will link Newham and Greenwich. It's actually called the 'Thames Gateway bridge', but we prefer 'Superbridge', so that's what we're going to call it. However Superbridge may never actually come into being as the plans for its development are going through a public enquiry, starting today. On one side you have the Thames Gateway London Partnership who (as......

Norwich, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Brom. One of these teams will be partying well into the night on Sunday, leaving the others to look forward to playing Hull, Plymouth, and Burnley next season. To avoid the drop, Palace will almost certainly have to beat their South East London rivals Charlton. Charlton who haven't scored in four, not won in eight, and lost the last four games; against Palace who have visited the Addicks 14......

“I am not quite sure whether I am dreaming or remembering, whether I have lived my life or dreamed it. Just as dreams do, memory makes me profoundly aware of the unreality, the evanescence of the world, a fleeting image in the moving water.” ~ Eugene Ionesco Chelsea, then. Not quite champions yet. Not quite one of Europe's best clubs. Not quite given the respect they think they deserve. They're away to Bolton on......
