The National Archives show that back in 1967 there was a "grave security breach" when a diplomat, Mr Murray MacLehose, left the details of correspondence between Prime Minister Wilson and US President Johnson concerning the Vietnam war in a bank on Regent Street. It probably went a bit like this - Johnson - Are you sure you don't want to come and fight for the free world in Vietnam? Wilson: No, really, we're ok.......

Craving Vietnamese food in the city? Well now you can satiate your noodle soup desires at the restaurant Pho found in Clerkenwell. Unlike its brethren congregated along Kingsland Road, Pho stands out as the only Vietnamese restaurant amongst the more upmarket dining options on St Johns Street. Pho has a decent number of tables though always appears full anytime past seven during the week when its open. After that you'll have to queue and......

There have been some pretty big acts of protest in the past. The self immolation of Thích Quảng Đức as protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the authoritarian administration governing South Vietnam; the lone protester who tried to stop four advancing tanks in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989; Brian Haw's protest in Parliament Square since June 2001. However, these efforts have all been eclipsed by workers from a Burberry factory in South......

According to an article in The Economist published in 2003 London Underground has one of the best safety records of any of the older metro systems in the world, with just one fatal accident for every 300m journeys. Posters every now and again remind us about the tally of accidental deaths that occur each year and of course there is the occasional news story of a death or the improbably mundane driver announcement that......

This day in London’s History 1966: Arrests at Vietnam Rally in Grosvenor Square. Some 4000 people gathered to protest against the Vietnam war and things turned violent as scuffles broke out at the demonstration outside the US Embassy. The general secretary of the Communist Party, John Gollan, asked demonstrators to call it a day, but instead they knocked a police officer from his motorbike and set fire to petrol that leaked from the bike. This......

In case you hadn't noticed, the Boat Race is taking place this Sunday. The 152nd meeting between the crews of Oxford (dark blues) and Cambridge (light blues) will begin at 4.35pm near Putney Bridge and will finish 17 minutes or so later at Chiswick Bridge. Around 250,000 spectators will line the sides of the Thames, cheering on their favoured boat, with the most popular vantage point being the 'Surrey Bend' near Hammersmith Bridge. You......

Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, for the new series of Green Wing (Fri 9pm C4) is upon us! We don't envy whoever has to go round the Tube taking down all the teaser posters, however. There isn't much we can add to this, except it makes us happy. As does the thought of Adam Rickett being eaten by Lord Freddie Whatsisface - shame that the producers of Alive: Back To The Andes (Wed 8pm Five) chickened......

We only just got around to seeing Peter Watkins' Punishment Park - we figured we've waited for 35 years... what's another week or so matter. Now we're kicking ourselves for not getting along to the ICA sooner so we could recommend this to you guys earlier. We caught the very last screening yesterday afternoon, but we still want to mention the film as it's due for a DVD release in the Autumn. It's what......

Is Robin Williams any good or not? We can't seem to make our minds up. Insomnia: good. Bicentennial Man: bad. The Birdcage: good. Jack: bad. Good Morning Vietnam: good. Patch Adams: so very very bad. So what are we to make of the news that Williams is to play the role of Peter Sellers in a forthcoming West End play? The play, to be written by former Sellers script writer John Antrobus and his......

Londonist is sorry to report that the Star Wars cancer continues to spread like a cheap whore on pay day with no force on Earth seemingly able to stop it. Following the tickets for the back-to-back marathon screening of all six Star Wars films in Leicester Square selling out in minutes George Lucas has announced his plans to keep milking the franchise - even though this particular cash cow has been brain-dead since at......
